Preserve tooth structure — treat caries

When caries damages the hard tooth structure, a filling restores form and function. At Puls' Zahnmedizin in Dortmund-Horde, we exclusively use modern, tooth-colored materials — for an aesthetic and long-lasting result. Our goal is always the most substance-preserving treatment possible.

Materials

Composite (Plastic Filling)

Tooth-colored, adhesively bonded filling material — today's standard. The bonding technique stabilizes the tooth and the result is aesthetically nearly invisible.

Ceramic Inlay

For larger defects, lab-fabricated ceramic inlays offer the highest aesthetics, precision fit, and durability. Digitally planned and precisely placed.

Glass Ionomer Cement

Suitable for temporary restorations or children's teeth. Releases fluoride and is used as a transitional solution.

Layer-by-layer buildup of the filling with tooth-colored composite and light curing.

5

Shaping & Polish

Fine-tuning of the chewing surface and high-gloss polish for a natural result.

Filling Therapy Costs

Composite fillings in the anterior region are covered by statutory insurance. In the posterior region, statutory insurance covers the equivalent of an amalgam filling — the co-payment for a composite filling is approximately 30 to 120 EUR depending on scope. Ceramic inlays are a private service costing 300 to 800 EUR depending on size. We do not use amalgam in our practice.

Minimally Invasive Tooth Preservation

Our philosophy: Preserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible. Modern bonding techniques enable substance-preserving restorations that simultaneously stabilize the tooth. When needed, we use magnification loupes or a dental microscope to precisely remove even the smallest carious areas — without sacrificing healthy tooth structure unnecessarily.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Fillings

How long do composite fillings last?

Composite fillings typically last 8 to 15 years with good oral hygiene and regular check-ups. Longevity depends on the size and location of the filling, chewing forces, and individual oral care. Fillings can be repaired or replaced at any time if needed.

Is a filling treatment painful?

No. Thanks to modern local anesthesia, the treatment is typically painless. We use fine injection needles and take time for gentle numbing. For very small fillings, anesthesia may not even be necessary.

Why don't you use amalgam?

Amalgam contains mercury and no longer meets current dental standards. Since 2025, amalgam use has been largely restricted in the EU. Modern composite fillings are aesthetically pleasing, tooth-preserving, and provide a stabilizing effect on the tooth through adhesive bonding technique.

What does insurance cover for dental fillings?

Statutory health insurance covers the cost of a filling in the posterior region as a standard benefit (amalgam equivalent). For tooth-colored composite fillings in the posterior region, a co-payment of approximately 30 to 120 EUR applies. In the anterior region, composite fillings are fully covered by insurance.

When do I need a filling?

A filling is necessary when caries (tooth decay) has damaged the hard tooth structure. Caries is detected through a dental examination — often supported by X-rays or digital diagnostics. The earlier caries is detected, the smaller and more tooth-preserving the filling can be.
