White spots on teeth – what causes them?

Pale, chalky patches on front teeth can be bothersome even when you like their shape and alignment. These white spots can develop when enamel loses minerals, for example around fixed orthodontic brackets. Fluorosis and other changes in enamel development can also cause them. Treatment therefore starts with identifying the cause.

Treating white spots after braces

After fixed brackets are removed, pale outlines or patches may become visible. If you want these white spots treated, the first step is an enamel examination. ICON can mask suitable spots; whether remineralization or another treatment should come first depends on the findings.

What is ICON treatment?

ICON is a microinvasive enamel infiltration procedure. After surface preparation, a low-viscosity resin penetrates porous enamel and is cured with light. Changing how light passes through these areas can help white spots blend with the surrounding tooth color. Unlike a veneer, ICON does not cover the tooth with a ceramic shell.

When is resin infiltration suitable?

It may be suitable for certain white spots after braces, some fluorosis-related spots and early decay where the surface has not broken down. In early decay, infiltration can slow or stop progression. Suitability depends on the cause, depth and condition of the affected area.

What are the limits of ICON?

Not every spot can be completely masked. Deep enamel changes or existing cavities may need other treatments. ICON largely preserves tooth structure but requires targeted preparation of the enamel surface. We also discuss alternatives such as remineralization, microabrasion or composite restorations when appropriate.

The ICON treatment process

  1. Examination and planning

We assess the spots and your dental health, discuss your wishes and explain what results are realistic.

  2. Preparation and infiltration

The teeth are cleaned and isolated, and the gums are protected. Following controlled surface preparation, the resin is applied and cured with light.

  3. Polishing and review

Finally, we polish the treated surfaces. The color is assessed after the teeth have rehydrated and at a follow-up visit.

How much does ICON treatment cost?

The cost depends on the number of teeth and surfaces treated and the preparation required. Following an examination, you receive an individual estimate. Ask your insurer about possible reimbursement before treatment using the proposed treatment plan.

Questions about ICON and white spots

Can white spots after braces be removed?

For suitable spots, ICON can reduce the visible contrast. First we check for demineralization, active decay or other enamel changes. Sometimes stabilization through oral hygiene and remineralization is appropriate before further treatment.

Is ICON the same as teeth whitening?

No. Whitening lightens tooth color; ICON targets porous enamel to mask spots. Depending on the findings, both treatments may be combined. We plan the sequence before treatment.

Can treatment be done without drilling?

For suitable superficial lesions, conventional drilling for a filling is not required. However, the enamel surface still needs targeted preparation. Deeper changes may benefit from another or an additional procedure.

How many visits will I need?

The infiltration itself can often be completed in one session. Examination, any pretreatment and follow-up are planned individually. The time needed depends on the number of teeth and the depth of the spots.

Will the white spots disappear completely?

This cannot be promised for every case. The aim is to make the spots less noticeable. Deep or extensive changes may remain partly visible; we discuss the likely outcome based on your teeth.
